Title: Proof of the transverse instability of Stokes waves
Abstract: A Stokes wave is a traveling free-surface periodic water wave that is constant in the direction transverse to the direction of propagation. In 1981 McLean discovered via numerical methods that Stokes waves at infinite depth are unstable with respect to transverse perturbations of the initial data. We will discuss a rigorous proof of these three-dimensional instabilities. This is based on joint work with R. Creedon (UW) and W. Strauss (Brown).
Location: Residents of Lewis Hall can attend talks in the Wan Conference Room (Lewis 208) at 11:30am. The talk will also be streamed live via Zoom.
